Jan Bárta – strong Czech cronoman at 100th Giro d'Italia 2017

In these days, in Italy there is 100th edition of the famous Giro d'Italia 2017. Few days are missing to finish of this Grand Tour and we were able to interview the Czech professional biker Jan Bárta, who is running for the team Bora - Hansgrohe.

Jan Bárta took part in the Giro d'Italia in 2012, where he finished on 2nd place in the 14th stage. He is the four times champion of the Czech Republic in chronometer race type in the period 2012-2015. In 2012, he was nominated with Roman Kreuziger at the Olympics in London and also participated at the Olympic Games in 2016 in Rio. Currently, he is riding for the professional team Bora.

How does Jan feel in these days at Giro? What role does he do in the team and what is his goal by the end of the Giro d'Italia? You will find out all this and more in our interview...

1. What difference do you find between this year's Giro d'Italia and your participation at Giro in 2012?

I feel like the organizers are trying to make it harder and harder. Giro is profoundly worse than Tour and it is the extreme this year. At that time I was a rookie, everything was new for me, the clouds of fans, I never saw before Giro 2012. Now I am not so surprised as at the beginning. Even though it is beautiful, how many Czechs are here. The Czech Flags everywhere...

2. How do you feel in your team Bora and what role do you play in Giro d'Italia within your team?

Thanks to a large number of Slovaks and Poles, we are now interpreting more than ever before. But that's more like that stuff (about people). I do not have a problem with German language, I enjoyed people from the team also before. I have more things in the team task table than others. There is a need to: start the spur into about 2 km to the target, attempt to escape, pull on the wind to our peers (cyclist specialized to ascending to the hills).

3. What ultimate expectations do you personally have at Giro d'Italia and what is your goal for the next stages?

Survive. It's my worst Grand Tour I've been to. The second stage, when I had to save our spurter from the limit and pull the whole pack, cut my legs. But basically, thanks to that, Sam Benett spanked several times on the podium, so my work did not come alive.

4. What would you advise/recommend to novice young cyclists who want to get to a higher level?

It is not possible without the will. In cycling, you have to be able to work terrible hard and be able to ’’bite’’ in your crisis and not to give up . This cannot be taught.

5. What would you say about Czech cycling?

It's a pity that QuickStep farm has ended, but there are still some people trying to work with the young. It is nice to see that the number of boys in good teams is growing.

6. Are you a very good cronoman, Tri Fun Fit is watching a lot of Ironman triathlon tracks, what would you recommend to age group triathletes in terms of crono bike position? Which is often very troublesome on long tracks…

Probably training on the velodrome. I think it is not a problem to arrange a rental of a velodrome and from my personal experience I can say that the evaluation of the sedation can be measured on the track perhaps even better than in the tunnel.

7. What type of device do you use to monitor your training?

I do not even use a pulse measurement belt neither in the race. I ride with Garmin and check miles. Watt just marginally.

8. What, in your opinion, is physical preparation important for cyclists? What's your opinion on this subject?

It is very important to learn to breathe properly. Then core training to avoid overloading or unilateral loading. And definitely not overload with extra strength training "small children".

9. How is hydration important to you and what about hobby cycling for lovers?

Shorter rides I ride only on water. Over 5 hours, ionic drink.

10. Tri Fun Fit also focuses on triathlon, does this discipline appeal to you in the future?

I love swimming, run as additional sport in winter, I have a sports middle school, so I have a relationship with other sports, but till now I have never thought about it to do triathlon. :)

Thank you very much to Jan, who found time and in these days of full fatigue and concentration, and that he made this interview with us. It only confirms his humility and professionalism. We appreciate it very much and we wish him and his whole team a lot of luck and a nice finish of the last few days of Giro d'Italia 2017.
