Bruno Pasqualini – from rowing to triathlon
Bruno Pasqualini has moved in the world of sport since its very early age. In his 14 years, he started rowing, which for this kind of sport is a little late, but even that did not prevent him from developing a national Italian team, which represented in 2000 and the Olympics in Sydney. He participated in several international competitions and his rowing career ended in 2005. After 3 years of recreational sport among various sports disciplines his friend introduced him to his first taste of a triathlon. And in the three celebrated disciplines of sports, as Bruno says, accomplishments become greater with age. Bruno specializes in olympic length triathlons, which is usually 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and a 10 km run. Additionally, Bruno sometimes includes races that are the length of a half Ironman, (ie. Half distance triathlon) in his racing program.
I had the opportunity to meet with the race TRI EXPERT TRI Prague with Bruno as our guest guest from Italy. I was very interested in his story and how an athlete who was successful in rowing ended up also excelling in triathlons. After a few minutes of conversation with Bruno, I feel that he is an athlete and a mentally strong man who loves sports, challenges and fights without giving up.
Bruno, if you had to name your biggest success in your sporting career, what would it be?
When I was at the beginning of my professional rowing career, I attended the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, I won the world championships in Seville in 2002, then I finished second in Barcelona in 2004, third in the San Caterin in 1999. I managed to fight my way into the world finals four times, place on several podiums in the world Cup and rack up around ten Italian titles.
Wow, you have our admiration, Bruno. What goals would you rank highest in your triathlon career?
I started triathlons in 2008. If I start from the most recent race at the end of June, I won the Olympic triathlon Idroman, then in May I won the European title in the Olympic triathlon in Lisbon in the men's category 40/44 and I was the first in the my age bracket of athletes. I also won the European races still in my category M40 / 44 in the olympic triathlon in 2015 in Geneva, in 2014 in Kitzbuell, and in 2015 I won my category 40/44 in the Challenge Family race of the lenght 70.3 in Rimini. These are probably my greatest European achievements. As for the Italian field, I had also various successes in duathlon and triathlon from 2009 - 2015. I think that’s enough from my sports biography. (Author's Note, in the Italian race Idroman Bruno won over several professional triathletes)
Did your rowing training give you a leg up in triathlons?
These are the different types of preparations. Rowing is a very demanding sport, but it is a short distance. Trainings are very hard, but relatively short: around two hours. But what has certainly helped me is some of those aerobic activities that we were well trained in.
What is your motivation to participate in the race TRI EXPERT TRI Prague?
It's a new experience for me and I still haven’t participated in this race, so I just thought this is very motivating for me. The combination of this triathlon and Prague as well as beautiful city where I first is an irresistible combination. I like racing outside Italy to get to know new places, new people, and new experiences.
Bruno is a very humble and personable man. He trains around 12-15 hours a week, under the guidance of the famous trainer Andrea Gabba (the coach of the Italian national triathlon team, who repeatedly led up to the Olympics and now trains the Turkish national team triathlon). Who else knows the sport best after his coach? So we we asked Andrea what he knows about Bruno ... ’’Bruno has moved into professional triathlon and through determination has learned from his many years of rowing. For many triathletes he is becoming an example to follow. His victories first in rowing and now in triathlons are not chance, but are the result of the incredible commitment and dedication to daily training.’’
